How to achieve a perfect paint job

A metal fence is a timelessly beautiful addition to your garden. and your property. A coat of paint ensures a long-lasting shine and reliable weather resistance – and gives your wrought iron fence a unique touch of colour at the same time. We'll explain what you need to consider when painting your metal fence. If you keep a few basic things in mind, painting your fence will be a breeze! Repainting a metal fence – the preparation Whether your metal fence is made of stainless steel and is new to your garden, or whether it's a few years old and has rust spots: you can't avoid preparation if you want to repaint your metal fence. Rusty metal fences – can they be painted? Generally speaking: even a rusty fence can shine like new. If your metal fence has rust spots, you must remove them beforehand so that the paint can adhere optimally to the metal.

Can you paint wrought iron?

If you are the proud owner of a wrought iron fence and want to paint it, you must first remove any rust spots with sandpaper or a rust converter. Then, clean your wrought iron fence of dust. Even if the dust isn't immediately visible, the finest particles always accumulate and must be removed beforehand. For this, simply use water and a mild household cleaner or dish soap.

Once the fence is dry and thoroughly cleaned, sand it again with sandpaper to roughen the surface and ensure optimal paint adhesion. can.

Can you paint hot-dip galvanised metal?

You can also paint a metal fence that is hot-dip galvanised. But here too, you must thoroughly clean and sand it beforehand so that the paint can be applied evenly and with good coverage.

To paint galvanised metal, you must first perform a so-called wetting agent wash. What sounds complicated is actually very simple. Mix ammonia and water in a 1:10 ratio and add a few drops of dish soap. Be sure to wear gloves and use a standard sponge when applying the solution. Once a gray foam forms, let the solution soak for 10 minutes. Then rinse off the wetting agent foam with clean water. Once the surface is dry, you can begin painting. Painting a metal fence without sanding – is that even possible? Admittedly, sanding a metal fence is quite a tedious and time-consuming job. But unfortunately, it's also necessary to remove dirt, rust, and old paint and to ensure an even, well-adhering coat of paint. However, you don't necessarily have to reach for the sandpaper. Practical alternatives include:

Sandblasting

Burning

Paint Stripping

With a sandblaster, your metal fence can be thoroughly cleaned of dirt and rust in a short time, and the surface can be roughened at the same time. For this type of cleaning, you should hire a specialized provider of abrasive surface treatments.

With a hot air gun that reaches temperatures between 500 and 600 degrees, you can remove old paint and adhesives from the metal. However, you will need to remove the residue with a spatula.

Special paint strippers are particularly suitable if old acrylic paints, acrylic resin paints, or two-component paints are adhering to your metal fence. The paint stripper is applied with a brush. Afterward, you simply need to scrape off the paint residue.

Paint or spray a metal fence?

Opinions differ when it comes to applying paint. Some prefer painting with a brush, while others swear by a spray gun. Ultimately, the deciding factor is cost. Because it's significantly cheaper to paint your metal fence with a brush than to use a spray system – although it's also more time-consuming.

With a spray gun, you can apply the paint over a large area, evenly, and quickly. Usually, one application is enough to paint the entire fence. Spraying produces a uniform coat of paint. However, spray guns or spray systems aren't exactly cheap. You'll typically pay between 50 and 150 for one. Besides the high cost of purchasing a paint sprayer, covering it with a tarp is difficult – the fine spray mist spreads quickly and widely over the immediate surroundings.

If you decide to apply paint using a sprayer, always wear a respirator and gloves.

The larger the fence, the more time-consuming the painting process becomes. A major advantage is that you can precisely paint even intricate areas and fine details with a brush. Furthermore, you can control the paint application more effectively than with a spray gun. Major disadvantage: As a rule, one coat of paint is not enough to achieve an even and opaque finish.

Painting a fence – which colour is best?

For metal fences, it's best to choose a paint with good coverage. As mentioned above, paints with integrated rust protection are a good option – this way the new coat of paint will last longer and you can enjoy a rich, glossy colour for much longer.

When choosing a colour, your personal taste is the deciding factor. You'll find a wide range of different colours from various manufacturers. These include effect paints for hammered and textured finishes, matte paints, and paints with a fine satin sheen.

Feel free to be creative: You can use different colours to create accents. These are particularly effective on richly decorated metal fences with finials and ornaments.

Tip

Tip:You can more easily sand and roughen the struts and arches of your fence if you cut the sandpaper into strips and pull them around each strut.
