Attaching a mailbox to a fence: the best solutions
At a Glance
- A letterbox can be securely and weather-proofly attached to a metal fence, especially wrought iron fences, using special fixings such as pipe clamps, fence clips, or heavy-duty cable ties.
- For a stylish combination, ELEO recommends modern wrought iron fences like the Lucca fencing system or garden gates like Ancona, which are particularly durable and easy to maintain thanks to their high-quality coating.
- Thanks to versatile mounting aids, a letterbox can also be added flexibly at a later date without the need for complex drilling or screw connections on ELEO fences.
A wrought iron front garden fence is perfectly suited for mounting a letterbox. Not only does it serve as an attractive feature, but it also makes life easier for the postie, as they don't have to cross the entire property to the front door to deliver letters and newspapers.
Since mounting a letterbox using traditional screw fixings can be difficult on a wrought iron fence, we present alternative ways to install a fence-mounted letterbox securely and stably.

Using pipe clamps or fence clips
Pipe clamps are a practical solution originally developed for pipes and plumbing. They can be easily attached to the bars of a wrought iron fence and offer a very stable way to mount a letterbox.
How it works:
Ideally, choose metal pipe clamps or fence clips that are rubber-coated to protect both the fence and the letterbox.
Ensure that the size of the clamps matches the bars of your wrought iron fence.
Position two to four clamps (depending on the size of the letterbox) evenly distributed at the upper and lower fixing points of the letterbox.
Tighten the screws of the clamps so that the letterbox is firmly and securely attached to the fence.
This method of fence mounting is particularly robust and withstands wind and weather.
Brackets or adapters for fences
There are brackets specifically designed for attaching letterboxes to fences. These letterbox mounts are designed to attach securely to fence bars and are also flexible should you wish to move the letterbox later.
How to do it:
Inquire either directly with the letterbox manufacturer or at your local DIY store about mounting adapters for fences.
These adapters are fixed directly to the fence bars, and the letterbox itself can then be attached to the adapters.
Choose a model with adjustable clamps that can be individually adapted to your fence.
Such letterbox brackets offer high stability and are relatively easy to install.
Heavy-duty cable ties or clamping straps
For a quick, cost-effective, and discreet solution for mounting fence letterboxes, cable ties or clamping straps made of stainless steel and aluminium are a good choice. They are significantly more stable than conventional wire fixings and hold up even in extreme weather conditions such as heavy frost.
How it works:
Choose high-quality cable ties or clamping straps suitable for outdoor use.
Fix at least four cable ties or clamping straps, evenly distributed at the top and bottom corners of the letterbox. Then attach the letterbox to the fence and pull the cable ties/clamping straps as tight as possible to ensure a stable fit. For cable ties, you can trim off any protruding ends.
Stainless steel clamping straps are particularly robust and weatherproof. They can be easily removed and re-fixed if necessary.
Tip: Antique-style letterboxes look particularly stylish on the classic, romantic wrought iron fences available from ELEO Express.
