How to create a lawn edge – in 5 steps
Creating a lawn edge and setting lawn edging stones can be done in 5 steps. In our instructions, we'll create the lawn edging using concrete and edging stones.
Step 1: Stretch a guideline
Planning is the first step in any garden project. Consider whether the lawn edging under the fence should be straight or curved – this depends on your fence design.
Stretch a guideline from one end of the planned edging to the other. You can secure the ends with stakes or rods. Use a spirit level and a tape measure to check that the guideline is in a straight line. The height of the line determines the height of the edging stones, or rather, shows how high the edging stones will ultimately protrude from the ground.
Step 2: Cut out the lawn edge
Now you can grab your spade. Using the guide string, cut out the lawn edge and dig a trench. This should be slightly wider than the final edging stones. The depth depends on how stable you want the lawn edge to be. For example, a depth of 50 cm is recommended for high load-bearing capacity. Otherwise, around 20 to 30 cm is sufficient.
Step 3: Pour the foundation
A concrete foundation provides the necessary stability. Mix the appropriate amount of concrete (refer to the packaging instructions) and pour it into the trench. The fill level should be high enough so that the future lawn edging stones are flush with the guide string. Caution: Concrete hardens very quickly. Therefore, work as quickly as possible.
Step 4: Setting the lawn edging stones
Once the concrete is poured, you can set the lawn edging stones. Place the stones as close together as possible. Then tap them firmly into place with a rubber mallet until the desired height is reached. Once all the stones are correctly positioned, allow the concrete to dry completely.
Step 5: Fill with Soil
Once the concrete has hardened, the final, optional step follows: If any small gaps remain between the lawn edging and the edging stones, you can simply fill them with soil. The lawn edging under your fence is now complete!
