How wrought iron fences and railings are made
A wrought iron fence or railing is – as the name suggests – made by forging. The wrought iron process begins with the production of steel, which is then forged into the desired shapes and sizes. Wrought iron is prized for its exceptional stability and weather resistance.
Basically, there are six steps to manufacturing wrought iron components:
1. Design: What should the fence or railing look like? The first step in manufacturing a wrought iron fence or railing is the design. First, a detailed design must be created, including the exact dimensions, patterns, and ornaments required for the final product.
2. Preparation of Materials and Equipment Once the design is finalized, the materials are prepared. This includes sourcing the steel, preparing patterns and molds, and gathering tools and equipment.
In the next step, the steel is heated to a high temperature in a forge to make it malleable. Wrought iron is usually heated to a temperature between 1200 and 1300 degrees Celsius. This range is called the forging temperature and is necessary to bring the material into a malleable state that allows it to be forged and shaped.
4. Forging: Shaping the Steel
Once the steel has been heated to the required temperature, the blacksmith begins to shape it. This can be done by hammering, pressing, or punching.
5. Welding: From Individual Parts to a Whole
After the shaping is complete, the individual forged parts are assembled and then welded together to form the fence panel or railing.
6. Finishing: Powder coating, galvanising, or weathering steel The finished fence or railing element is now finished with a coating that provides protection from the elements and enhances its appearance. Anthracite powder coating is one of the most popular coating options. A galvanised wrought iron piece impresses with a silvery-matte look; weathering steel, on the other hand, has a romantic character.
Now the wrought iron fence or railing is finished and ready for installation.
